When shellac is in a liquid form it is possible to add some amount of Shines’ Hardener so that the resulting film is much harder than an ordinary shellac finish. This coating withstands heat, water and alcohol. This makes it ideal for table tops, musical instruments and anything else which could get in contact with the elements. The benefits are no white rings on the surface as a result of condensation from glasses, no tackiness from placing hot mugs on the surface, or from alcohol spills. Shake before each and every use.

Shines Hardener For 4:1 Shellac Solutions

Preparation

Shines Hardener formulation has been calibrated for 4:1 ratio of DAA(100% Denatured Alcohol) : Shellac solution. Dissolve shellac in the right proportions with DAA. This additive has been mixed appropriately for maximum hardening for this proportion. Once dissolved, the solution need to be filtered through a paint strainer cone or similar filter to remove any debris.

Shake well! The additive should be in intimate contact with the shellac solution for 72 hours before the hardened shellac can be used.

Proportion

• 41.75ml Hardener additive.
  SUFFICIENT to make 250ml of Hardened French Polish for shellac solution made up in a ratio of 4:1. eg 1lt DAA to 250gm of ANY shellac.
• 83.5ml Hardener additive.
  SUFFICIENT to make 500ml of Hardened French Polish for shellac solution made up in a ratio of 4:1. eg 1lt DAA to 250gm of ANY shellac.
• 167ml Hardener additive.
  SUFFICIENT to make 1lt of Hardened French Polish for shellac solution made up in a ratio of 4:1. eg 1lt DAA to 250gm of ANY shellac.
• 668ml Hardener additive.
  SUFFICIENT to make 4lt of Hardened French Polish for shellac solution made up in a ratio of 4:1. eg 1lt DAA to 250gm of ANY shellac.
• 835ml Hardener additive.
  SUFFICIENT to make 5lt of Hardened French Polish for shellac solution made up in a ratio of 4:1. eg 1lt DAA to 250gm of ANY shellac.

Safety

• Please wear safety gloves and protective eye wear.  Avoid any naked flames around your work area.

Tips 

• For heat resistance on window and door frames, tables, pillars etc, every coat should be with hardened shellac.
• Application gear must not be allowed to dry otherwise brushes, rubbers and spray nozzles will go rock hard. Wash them out well with DAA.

Process of application and coating time gaps

• Similar to unhardened shellac

Tearing

• Using some oils on long strokes is recommended.

Drying

• Slightly slows drying reducing blooming and allowing a brush to be used on larger surfaces without the “edge” drying.

Spraying

• Allows Spraying without pock marks.
